Hi Everyone!

Welcome to this years version of most of Hyde Park Elementary School in Morrisville (HPES@Plaza).  Also to the 6th graders, living the "high life", at the Tech. Center, you are not forgotten.

Let me introduce myself, I'm Mike Lambert and I'm the new Technology Coordinator for Hyde Park.  I'm a Systems Engineer with many (40+) years experience in Technology, including business systems and education.  I've been "around" since mainframe computer days and have worked on many projects ranging from enabling TCP/IP audio in the New York Subway, to creating state wide video systems, and lots of school networking.  I'm a former President of VITA-Learn, and I'm active in technology at many levels.

I will start here by confirming to you that technology moves at a fast and nearly impossible to keep up with pace!  New items today, can easily be "old" items by next week (sometimes by the next day)!

Part of my job is applying all this new "stuff" to make a great education even better. The purpose of this blog is to give everyone here a place to go to look for hints, suggestions and working solutions.  From time to time, you might even get some "peeks" into new things, too!

In general, you'll be looking through my eyes at current topics that have to deal with helping you understand current and future technology in this fast paced environment.  Keep in mind you may get my opinions on things too, and I ALWAYS welcome YOUR feedback.  The audience this blog will be directed to is not just teacher and staff, but students too.

So with that being said....

    Welcome Mike! We are very lucky to have you at our school. It is refreshing to have someone who is experienced in their field and can help Hyde Park lead the way in education through technology.

HPES Web page changes....

Web pages can drive people crazy.  If a web site doesn't change often, or does what some call "go static", it's hard to get people to look at it ever again.  Also "old information" will tend to make this problem worse. The HPES web site ( http://www.hpes.org ) is made from basic Google "Sites" web pages.  It's GREAT at what it was designed to do: give information as a tool. Now the thing about Google is, as a company, they are WONDERFUL at producing "tools".  You might like to think of them like you think of the "generic" brand you might pick up at the grocery store: functional but generally "basic", especially when new information isn't passed on to keep information more current. Teachers (and Staff): Chromebooks vs. Laptops

Do you want a Chromebook, or a Laptop?  In education, there is a constant debate between having a Chromebook or a Laptop as your "main" computing device.  It's budget time, and I am looking to make a few changes, but I'd love some feedback and input from everyone so I can make informed choices.  I also know it's nice to have some facts to base a decision on, so I thought I'd give you my take on using both Laptops and Chromebooks.  Here goes.... Laptops Desktops were the first small computers, but soon it was clear that users wanted  "portability", the ability to take the whole computing environment with they went somewhere else.  Thus the "portable computer" was created.  Pictured above (Compaq), you'll notice there wasn't anything  REALLY  portable about it!
